Technical Programs Unit

The Technical Programs Unit focuses on fostering counterterrorism technologies. Its primary charge is to guide the activities of the Technical Support Working Group (TSWG), an interagency forum that coordinates U.S. government-wide technology development for combating terrorism. The Technical Programs Unit provides policy oversight for the TSWG on behalf of the Coordinator for Counterterrorism. Management and technical oversight of the TSWG is provided by the Department of Defense, through the Assistant Secretary of Defense for Special Operations and Low-Intensity Conflict.

The TSWG conducts the National Combating Terrorism Research and Development Program, which advances, utilizes and applies science and technology in U.S. anti-terrorism efforts. The work of the TSWG underpins counterterrorism initiatives, programs and activities including diplomacy, military action, intelligence, law enforcement, and training. The TSWG membership includes representatives from over 100 organizations across the Federal government, as well as representatives from select state and local agencies that have been invited to participate.

In addition to the National Program, the TSWG carries out collaborative, international research and technology development programs with selected North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) members, major non-NATO allies, and other friendly foreign nations.

More information about the TSWG, TSWG participating departments and agencies, and the National Combating Terrorism Research and Development Program is available at the TSWG website: http://www.tswg.gov.
