United States-Russian Federation Working Group on CounterterrorismThe Weapons of Mass Destruction Subgroup of the United States-Russian Federation Working Group on Counterterrorism met at the United States Mission in Geneva on October 12, 2002 to discuss bilateral cooperation to address the threat of terrorist use of weapons of mass destruction. Ambassador Francis X. Taylor, Coordinator for Counterterrorism, United States Department of State and Anatoly Safonov, Deputy Foreign Minister, Russian Federation Ministry of Foreign Affairs headed the delegations.
The delegations reviewed extensive on-going bilateral cooperation relevant to the threat of terrorist use of weapons of mass destruction, and agreed that further cooperation was essential given the urgent need to address this threat. Technical experts shared information on specific programs that exemplify U.S.-Russian cooperation in this area. In particular, the delegations noted the work of technical experts from the United States Department of Energy and the Russian Federation Ministry of Atomic Energy that furthers mutual counterterrorism objectives.
The subgroup will reconvene during the next meeting of the United States–Russian Federation Working Group on Counterterrorism, that is chaired by Richard Armitage, Deputy Secretary of State, United States Department of State and Vyacheslav Trubnikov, First Deputy Minister, Russian Federation Ministry of Foreign Affairs. At that time, the subgroup will review the status of bilateral cooperation, and consider specific proposals for further cooperation.
