Impact(s): Antiretroviral (ARV) treatment provides direct therapeutic benefits for the individuals who receive treatment by: increasing the length and quality of their lives, enabling many individuals to resume normal daily activities and providing care for their families. ARVs reduce viral load in patients on therapy, and lower viral loads are associated with decreased rates of transmission. PEPFAR-supported treatment has helped to save and extend millions of lives as well as avoid the orphaning of hundreds of thousands of children whose parents are infected with HIV/AIDS.
1 Since the headquarters review of the Country Operational Plans, the document that provides the targets, is ongoing, FY 2010 and FY 2011 targets will not be available until mid- to late 2010. (back to text)
