Deputy Secretary of State John D. Negroponte and Assistant Secretary of State for African Affairs Jendayi Frazer traveled November 9-16, 2007 to Cote d’Ivoire, Nigeria, Burkina Faso, and Mali. They met with the leadership of each country and with representatives of civil society. In Mali, the Deputy Secretary led the presidential delegation to the meeting of the Community of Democracies to highlight the United States’ commitment to promoting democracy, good governance, and partnership with nations that share common values. The delegation discussed democracy, security, rule of law, and sustainable development with key partners in West Africa.
Deputy Secretary Negroponte then traveled to Pakistan on November 16 for meetings with President Musharraf and other senior Pakistani government officials including National Security Advisor Aziz, Vice Chief of Army Staff General Kayani, former Foreign Minister Kasuri, and Inter-Services Intelligence Director General Taj. He also spoke by phone with Pakistan People’s Party leader Benazir Bhutto.
