The P3 Impact Award  was created by the U.S. Department of State’s Office of Global Partnerships (GP), Concordia, and the University of Virginia Darden School Institute for Business in Society  to recognize and honor leading public-private partnerships (P3s) that improve communities and the world. Inaugurated in 2014, the P3 Impact Award is presented each fall at the Annual Concordia Summit. This year’s application process is now open until April 12, 2021. Learn more about the award, previous finalists, and how to apply at https://www.concordia.net/p3impactaward/.

This award, itself a collaborative partnership between GP, Concordia, and UVA Darden School of Business, highlights exemplary public-private partnerships from across the globe that are improving local communities and the world in the most impactful ways. The award gives partnership practitioners the opportunity to reflect on current developments in P3 implementation, as well as inspiration for further innovation. For this award, a P3 refers to any cross-sector collaboration that features public, private, nonprofit, or non-governmental organizations and addresses societal problems.

2021 also marks the second annual P3 Impact Accelerator program  available as a potential benefit of applying to the award. Led by P3 Impact Award partners, this is a special public-private partnership accelerator program designed to help advance early-stage partnerships who may need support and guidance as they continue to work on achieving positive social impact. Specific partnerships who will not advance as finalists, as identified by the organizers, will be invited to participate in the Accelerator for a six-week set of virtual learning modules and events culminating with a half day convening taking place at the 2021 summit alongside P3 Impact Award.

The 2020 winner was the Eye Bank of Ethiopia’s Elimination of Corneal Blindness Partnership, a public-private partnership between the Ethiopia Federal Ministry of Health, SightLife, and the Himalayan Cataract Project which aims to serve as a model for development throughout Africa via the establishment of the first eye bank in sub-Saharan Africa. The partnership’s program utilizes global best practices, ensures a steady supply of tissue to the country, and drives cornea health system policy enablers.

Other 2020 award finalists recognized for their excellence in partnership included: Asili, Eastern Congo Initiative’s Social Enterprise in the Democratic Republic of the Congo; Localizing Development: IAF-Mott Public-Private Partnership in Mexico; State Affordable Medicines Program in Ukraine; and the global initiative, WASH UP!
