On May 17, 2011, the U.S. Department of State in coordination with the U.S. Agency for International Development convened the inaugural Global Diaspora Forum in Washington, DC. The Forum ran for three days and marked the first time that the Department had ever convened diaspora groups at such a large scale. The Global Diaspora Forum is an annual celebration of America’s diaspora communities. The gathering challenges diaspora communities to forge partnerships with the private sector, civil society, and public institutions in order to make their engagements with their countries of origin or ancestry effective, scalable, and sustainable.
