On behalf of President Obama and the American people, I congratulate the people of Denmark as you celebrate Constitution Day.

Relations between the United States and Denmark date back to our earliest days, and the bonds between our two nations have proven both durable and dynamic. With nearly 1.5 million Americans tracing their origins to Denmark, our countries are bound by deep ties of friendship and a shared commitment to democracy, human liberty, and dignity. Those common approaches and commitments have led us to cooperate on a broad spectrum of common concerns, from health research and green technology development to human rights protection and counterterrorism efforts. The United States applauds Denmark’s strong stance on piracy and the promotion of the rule of law. We also appreciate Danish support for the NATO missions in Kosovo and Iraq, and we honor the bravery of Danish soldiers serving in Afghanistan, who personify Denmark’s global commitments to freedom, justice and development.

On this Constitution Day, I wish the Danish people the very best as we look forward to building an even brighter future together.
