Happy Independence Day, Chile. This September 18th, the United States joins you and all Chileans living around the world to celebrate the founding of your country 200 years ago.

This bicentennial commemorates Chile’s commitment to building peace, expanding social justice and economic opportunity, and strengthening democratic institutions. The people of your country have set a vibrant example, for our region and the world, even in the face of daunting challenges. I have been moved by the strength of the Chilean people.

The earthquake in February has demonstrated your unshaken determination. And your all-out efforts on behalf of the trapped miners truly is inspirational to all of us. So we join all Chileans in offering our prayers and support as we await their safe recovery.

Our strong partnerships with Chile – between our governments, our academic and cultural communities, our businesses, and our people – will continue to grow as we work hand-in-hand to build long-term progress and prosperity in the 21st century.
