On behalf of President Obama and the people of the United States, I congratulate the people of Tuvalu on the 32nd anniversary of your independence this October 1. Our friendship -- built on trust, respect, and a strong commitment to basic human freedoms -- has grown closer through our shared efforts to promote peace, democracy, and good will among nations. Together, we are working to address the challenges of the 21st century, including protecting the environment and combating climate change. The United States is committed to continuing our partnership with Tuvalu and engaging with the broader Pacific region on issues of common concern. As we join in celebrating your independence, we reaffirm the bonds of friendship and cooperation between our nations and look forward to further strengthening our bond in the future. I wish all the people of Tuvalu continued peace and prosperity in the coming year.
