On behalf of President Obama and the people of the United States, I am delighted to send best wishes to the people of Turkey as you celebrate the 88th anniversary of the founding of the modern Republic of Turkey this October 29. Sadly, this national holiday comes at a time of great sorrow for the Turkish people after the loss of life and devastation caused by the recent earthquake. My thoughts and prayers are with the friends and families of those killed and injured. The United States is committed to the people of Turkey as you recover and rebuild.
The United States and Turkey share a long history of friendship and cooperation based on shared values and interests. In this year of historic change in the Middle East and around the world, our partnership is more important than ever. From combating global terrorism and regional threats like the PKK and improving the security of Afghanistan with our NATO Allies and partners, to strengthening economic growth and enhancing people-to-people ties between our nations, the United States and Turkey are working together to promote peace and prosperity for more people around the world.
As you celebrate this special day, know that the United States stands with you as a partner and a friend. I look forward to deepening our cooperation as we work together to find solutions to our most pressing global challenges.
