Secretary Clinton traveled to the United Arab Emirates (U.A.E.) for a meeting of the Libya Contact Group on June 9. This meeting built on the last Contact Group meeting held in Rome and allowed the United States to discuss with its international partners the range of issues with respect to addressing the situation in Libya, including the ongoing implementation of United Nations Security Council Resolutions 1970 and 1973.
Secretary Clinton then traveled to Lusaka, Zambia, on June 10 for the African Growth and Opportunity Act (AGOA) Ministerial Forum, where she showcased this centerpiece of our trade policy with Africa and engaged with government, private sector, and civil society representatives from 37 different countries. While in Zambia, she also met with Zambian President Rupiah Banda as well as participated in events to highlight U.S. Government initiatives to improve the lives of the Zambian people.
From there, Secretary Clinton traveled to Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, and Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, to meet with Tanzanian President Jakaya Kikwete and Ethiopian Prime Minister Meles Zenawi. In Tanzania, she highlighted our successful bilateral engagement including a host of programs including Feed the Future (FTF). In Ethiopia, Secretary Clinton focused on regional issues, visiting the African Union (AU) headquarters and meeting with AU Chairperson Jean Ping, in addition to bilateral meetings.
