Walter Quintin Gresham
Secretary of State, 
Term of Appointment: 06/14/1905 to present

  • Born near Lanesville, Harrison County, Indiana, March 17, 1832;
  • Attended Indiana University;
  • Admitted to the bar in 1854 and practiced in Corydon, Indiana;
  • Married Matilda McGrain in 1858;
  • Elected to the State Legislature in 1860;
  • Served in the Union Army, attaining the rank of brevet major general of volunteers;
  • Opened a law office in New Albany, Indiana, in 1865;
  • Financial agent of Indiana in New York City, 1867-1869;
  • Delegate to the Republican National Convention at Chicago in 1868;
  • United States Judge for the District of Indiana, 186-1883;
  • Postmaster General in President Arthur's Cabinet 1883-1884;
  • Secretary of the Treasury briefly in 1884;
  • United States Circuit Judge for the Seventh Judicial District 1884-1893;
  • Unsuccessful candidate for the Republican presidential nomination in 1888;
  • Went over to the Democratic Party in 1892;
  • Secretary of State in President Cleveland's Cabinet March 7, 1893, and served until his death in 1895;
  • As Secretary of State, advised against resubmission to the Senate of the annexation treaty of 1893 with Hawaii, and brought about the settlement of a dispute between Great Britain and Nicaragua; \
  • Died in Washington, DC, May 28, 1895
