- Born in Fredericksburg, Virginia, October 22, 1780;
- Moved to Augusta, Georgia, with his parents;
- Graduated from the College of New Jersey in 1799;
- Admitted to the bar in 1802 and commenced practice in Augusta;
- Married Clara Meigs in 1801 or 1802;
- Became Attorney General of Georgia in 1808;
- Representative from Georgia 1813-1818;
- Senator from Georgia 1818-1819;
- Served as Minister to Spain 1819-1823;
- Again a Representative from Georgia 1823-1827;
- Governor of Georgia 1827-1829;
- Again a Senator from Georgia 1829-1834;
- Delegate to the anti-tariff convention at Milledgeville, Georgia, in 1832; earned the reputation of being one of the most powerful debaters of his time;
- Commissioned Secretary of State in President Jackson's Cabinet June 27, 1834, entered upon his duties July 1, 1834, continued in office under President Van Buren, and served until March 3, 1841;
- As Secretary of State, brought to a successful conclusion a serious controversy with France regarding payment under the claims convention of 1831;
- Died in Washington, D.C., October 21, 1841.
