Edmund Randolph
Secretary of State, 
Term of Appointment: 01/02/1794 to 08/20/1795

  • Born at "Tazewell Hall", near Williamsburg, Virginia, August 10, 1753;
  • Attended the College of William and Mary;
  • Admitted to the bar and practiced in Williamsburg;
  • Appointed aide-de-camp to General Washington in 1775;
  • Member of the Virginia constitutional convention and became mayor of Williamsburg in 1776;
  • Married Elizabeth Nicholas the same year;
  • Served as Attorney General of Virginia 1776-1786;
  • Member of the Continental Congress 1779-1782;
  • Served as Governor of Virginia 1786-1788;
  • Delegate to the Annapolis Convention of 1786 and to the Federal Constitutional Convention of 1787; was a member of the Virginia convention of 1788 that ratified the Constitution;
  • Member of the State House of Delegates 1788-1789;
  • Served as Attorney General in President Washington's Cabinet 1789-1794;
  • Commissioned Secretary of State January 2, 1794, entered upon his duties the same day, and served until August 20, 1795;
  • As Secretary of State, directed the negotiation of the treaty of 1795 with Spain, highly favorable to the interests of the United States;
  • Moved to Richmond and resumed the practice of law;
  • Senior counsel for Aaron Burr in the treason trial of 1807;
  • Died in Clarke County, Virginia, September 12, 1813.
