Death of Martin Burnham in the Philippines

Secretary Colin L. Powell
Washington, DC
June 7, 2002

I was deeply saddened by the news of the deaths of Martin Burnham and Ediborah Yap, and by the injury to Gracia Burnham.

The United States extends its deepest sympathy to the Burnham family, the Yap family, and the families of the Filipino soldiers who were wounded in this rescue operation.

This tragedy transpired despite the best efforts of the Government of the Philippines to secure a safe release of the hostages. President Arroyo, a staunch ally in the global war on terrorism, has expressed an unwavering determination to bring to justice or destroy the Abu Sayyaf terrorists. The United States stands with President Arroyo, the Armed Forces and the people of the Philippines in this just cause.
