Secretary of State Colin L. Powell traveled to the Middle East and Europe from April 8 to 17, 2002. The trip will take the Secretary to Morocco, EgyptSpain, Jordan, Israel,  Lebanon,  Syria and Jerusalem.

In Morocco the Secretary met with King Mohamed and then on to Egypt to consult with President Mubarak.  In Madrid, the Secretary will be participating in the semi-annual U.S. - European Union ministerial meeting. He will be consulting with his E.U. counterparts about the war on terrorism, issues on the U.S. - E.U. agenda and on our international diplomatic cooperation. The Secretary will also conduct bilateral meetings with Spanish leaders. In preparation for the President's summit visit to Russia in May, the Secretary plans to meet in Madrid with Russian Federation Foreign Minister Igor Ivanov .

In Jordan on April 11,  the Secretary met with King Abdullah II. In Jerusalem April 12, Secretary Powell met with Israeli Prime Minister Sharon and Foreign Minister Peres.  On Sunday April 14, he met with Chairman Yasser Arafat.

Secretary Powell will be traveling to Beirut, Lebanon and Damascus, Syria April 15 for discussions of another situation of urgent and serious concern: firing across the UN line at Israel's northern border. He will return to Jerusalem Monday evening.

Secretary of State Powell will meet with Prime Minister Sharon late tomorrow afternoon. We are also making arrangements to meet with Chairman Arafat on Wednesday morning.
