On behalf of President Obama and the people of the United States, I congratulate the people of the Lao People’s Democratic Republic as you celebrate your National Day on December 2.
This year marks 58 years of diplomatic relations between the United States and Laos, and we are pleased that our longstanding friendship has endured and continues to grow.
The United States remains committed to working with the Lao Government on economic development, bilateral trade and investment, combating infectious diseases, preserving the beautiful natural habitat of Laos, and a range of other issues important to our peoples.
We will continue to work in partnership with Laos to reduce the impact of unexploded ordnance and account for the remains of U.S. military service members.
Looking to the future, the United States welcomes the opportunity to enhance our partnership and to deepen the bonds of friendship between our two nations.
In honor of the Laos National Day, I wish the Lao people peace, prosperity, and happiness in the coming year.
