Secretary Kerry on His Upcoming Visit to Indonesia

John Kerry
Secretary of State
Washington, DC
February 15, 2014

SECRETARY KERRY: (Indonesian) Warm greetings from America.

There are few relationships that will be as vital in tackling the challenges of the 21st century as our growing ties with Indonesia and its people. The United States sees Indonesia as a leader in the region and as a partner in promoting continued peace and prosperity and addressing global climate change. On my last visit, I had the chance to see an Indonesian fishery incorporating sustainable practices into its operations at the Benoa port on the island of Bali. I'll tell you, it was a really remarkable sight: hardworking fishermen, some pretty big tuna, and the most spectacular ocean backdrop. Today, our nations are working together in more areas than ever before, on education, science, energy, security, health, open government, you name it. But nowhere is our challenge greater, and nowhere is shared leadership more vitally important, than on climate change. With more than 17,000 islands, Indonesia is especially vulnerable to the risks that rising sea levels pose. We need to be working together to seek solutions that help everybody. Climate change is a top priority for me as Secretary of State, and a top priority for President Obama, but I also know that the most powerful voices come from ordinary people. That’s why, on my upcoming trip, I'm looking forward to a conversation with the people of Indonesia about what more we can do as partners to protect our planet. Our team will be keeping you updated about my trip on Facebook and Twitter, so be sure to connect with us there.

(Indonesian) Thank you and see you soon.
