The Passing of Former Israeli President Ezer Weizman

Secretary Condoleezza Rice
Washington, DC
April 26, 2005

It is with great sadness that we learned of the death of former President of Israel Ezer Weizman this past weekend. Known for his flair and outspokenness, Mr. Weizman served the people of Israel nobly as head of the Israeli Air Force, Minister of Defense, a member of Parliament, and finally, as President, in a political career that spanned five decades. As Defense Minister, Ezer Weizman played a critical diplomatic role that paved the way for the historic peace treaty between Israel and Egypt in 1979. Ezer Weizman’s legacy will not soon be forgotten.

We extend our deepest condolences to his family, friends, and colleagues – and to the people of Israel – at this time of loss.
