On behalf of President Obama and the people of the United States, I congratulate the people of Austria as you celebrate your national day this October 26.
Fifty-five years ago, Austria emerged from World War II to become a stable democracy and a center of European culture. Today Austria and the United States remain strong partners facing the challenges of this new century together. We respect your historic commitment to neutrality, and we honor your willingness to stand up against oppression around the world. From the Balkans to the Middle East, Austrians have proven their commitment to equality, economic prosperity, and justice for all people.
The United States joins the people of Austria on this special day to celebrate our mutual commitment to freedom and democracy. I wish all Austrians a happy holiday, and look forward to working together as we continue to promote our shared values.
