On behalf of President Obama and the people of the United States, I am delighted to congratulate the people of Slovenia on your Independence Day this June 25.
In 1991, the people of Slovenia faced an uncertain future. But in just 20 years, your country has become a model for the region. Slovenia has impressed its neighbors - and indeed the world - by transforming into a vibrant and democratic society. As the first former Yugoslav republic to join the European Union and the North Atlantic Treaty Organization, Slovenia has become an engine of positive change in the Balkans. Around the world, whether in Gaza or Afghanistan, Slovenia is championing democracy, promoting the freedoms our two nations cherish.
Congratulations on 20 years of independence. On this special day, know that the United States stands with Slovenians as a partner and friend, and we are committed to a brighter future for all our people.
