On behalf of President Obama and the people of the United States, I am delighted to congratulate the people of Chile as you celebrate your Independence Day this September 18.
Chile and the United States have enjoyed a history of cooperation and mutual respect. We share many of the same values, including a commitment to the rule of law, human rights, and open trade. Today, we are working to curb the effects of climate change, strengthen democratic institutions, protect human rights and promote renewable energy.
Last year's earthquake and mine collapse and the daring rescue of those brave miners is a reminder of Chile’s unshakeable will and national spirit. As you celebrate this special day and reflect on all that you have accomplished, know that the United States is committed to expanding our cooperation as we work toward a safer, more peaceful, and prosperous world. Have a safe and happy Independence Day celebration.
