On behalf of President Obama and the people of the United States, I am delighted to send best wishes to the people of Switzerland as you celebrate the 721st anniversary of your foundation this August 1st.
Since the ratification of the Federal Charter over seven centuries ago, Switzerland has become an example of the power of democracy. This shared commitment to equality and justice has helped to strengthen our bond and friendship. We appreciate this partnership as we work to strengthen human rights, expand development, and curb the spread of nuclear weapons. I look forward to continuing to work together to meet even more global challenges.
It has been over 150 years since the United States and Switzerland established diplomatic relations, and these ties have strengthened over the years. Congratulations and best wishes on this special day.
