On behalf of President Obama and the people of the United States, I am delighted to send best wishes to the people of Costa Rica as you commemorate 191 years of independence this September 15. On this day, Costa Ricans from all walks of life can celebrate your nation’s distinctive history as a crossroads for Mesoamerican, South American, and European civilizations, and your bright future as a vibrant and prosperous democracy.
The United States and Costa Rica share a deep and broad partnership working to promote inclusive economic growth, security, democratic governance, and a clean energy future. The upcoming 50th anniversary of the Peace Corps in Costa Rica reflects our continuing commitment to economic development, education, and youth empowerment, to build a brighter future for the Costa Rican people.
Let us take this opportunity to renew the deep bonds of friendship for the years ahead. In the spirit of “Pura Vida,” we wish you a happy Independence Day.
