Travel to Cairo, Amman, Baghdad, Erbil, Brussels, Paris, and Riyadh, June 22-27, 2014

At the President’s direction, Secretary of State John Kerry traveled from June 22-27 to the Middle East and Europe to consult with partners and allies on how we can support security, stability, and the formation of an inclusive government in Iraq, to discuss Middle East security challenges, and to attend the NATO Foreign Ministerial.

On June 22, Secretary Kerry traveled to Cairo, Egypt to meet with senior government officials and reaffirm our strong partnership. The Secretary discussed a variety of issues covering our bilateral relationship as well as regional issues, including Iraq, Syria, Libya, Israeli-Palestinian relations, and the extremist and terror threats we all face.

In Amman, Jordan, Secretary Kerry held consultations with Foreign Minister Judeh.

Secretary Kerry arrived in Baghdad, Iraq, June 23, where he met with a Iraqi leaders from across the political spectrum, including Prime Minister Maliki, to discuss the crisis in Iraq. Following on President Obama’s announcement last week, he discussed U.S. actions underway to assist Iraq as it confronts this threat from ISIL and urged Iraqi leaders to move forward as quickly as possible with its government formation process to forge a government that represents the interests of all Iraqis.

On June 24, Secretary Kerry arrived in Erbil, Iraq, the seat of the Kurdistan Regional Government, where he met with senior officials, including President Barzani, and other Kurdish leaders. They discussed the crisis in Iraq and the important role that the Kurds can play in helping the central government address the security political challenges for the benefit of all Iraqis.

The Secretary then traveled to Brussels, Belgium, to participate in the NATO Foreign Ministerial, which discussed preparations for the NATO Summit in September as well as the ongoing crisis in Ukraine.

In Paris, France, the Secretary met with key regional partners and Gulf allies on Middle East security challenges, including Iraq and Syria.

The Secretary then traveled to Saudi Arabia on Friday to meet with His Majesty King Abdullah to discuss regional issues, including the situation in Iraq and how we can counter the shared threat that is posed by ISIL, as well to discuss our support for the moderate opposition in Syria.
