Secretary Rice: Travel to Europe, June 20-22, 2006

Secretary Rice traveled with the President and Mrs. Bush to Vienna, Austria, for this year's U.S.-EU summit. It was followed by a visit to Budapest, Hungary, to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the 1956 Hungarian revolution.
The U.S.-EU summit underscored the importance of our relationship with the European Union and provided an opportunity for the President to discuss our transatlantic agenda with European Council President Wolfgang Schuessel and European Commission President Jose Manuel Barroso.
The President and the EU leaders discussed a wide range of global challenges including preventing nuclear proliferation, combating terrorist financing, assisting reconstruction in Iraq, promoting peace and democracy in Europe and beyond, and increasing prosperity worldwide by reducing trade barriers and addressing energy security.

In Hungary, the President joined the Hungarian people in commemorating the 50th anniversary of the 1956 Hungarian revolution. President Bush delivered remarks commemorating the anniversary and also highlighted the inspiration and lessons offered from Hungary's remarkable transition and welcomed efforts to further advance reform in the region today.
