Secretary Clinton traveled to Malta, Libya, Oman, Afghanistan, Pakistan, Tajikistan, and Uzbekistan. Secretary Clinton was the first Secretary of State in the United States to visit Malta in more than two decades. She thanked the government and people of Malta for their extraordinary response to the events of this last year and to reaffirm the strong partnership and friendship between our two countries.
There were three main purposes to the Secretary’s visit to Libya. First was simply to offer on behalf of the American people and government, congratulations and best wishes to the Libyan people for what, through great hardship, sacrifice, and courage, they have achieved in opening the door to a more promising future for Libya after 42 years of the Qadhafi dictatorship.
The second area of focus for the Secretary’s trip was the whole range of transition-related issues, the way moving forward. The third area that the Secretary talked about was for an expanded deeper partnership between Libya and the United States, both at the official level and between the Libyan people and the people of the United States.
On October 19, Secretary Clinton made an unannounced visit to Kabul, Afghanistan. She met with Afghan President Hamid Karzai. On October 20 the Secretary traveled to Pakistan for bilateral meetings with Pakistani Government officials.
From October 22-23, Secretary Clinton traveled to Tajikistan and Uzbekistan. In Tajikistan, she met with President Emomali Rahmon and Foreign Minister Hamrokhon Zarifi; and held a town hall with civil society in Dushanbe.
In Uzbekistan, Secretary Clinton held a bilateral meeting with President Islam Karimov and Foreign Minister Elyor Ganiev; and toured the new General Motors Powertrain plant in Tashkent, where she gave remarks announcing the Central Asia Technology Entrepreneurship Program and Techno-Prize Competition.
