Dr. Robert L. Pfaltzgraff, Jr.


Dr. Robert Pfaltzgraff has been Shelby Cullom Davis Professor of International Security Studies at the Fletcher School, Tufts University, since 1983 and a member of the Fletcher School faculty since 1970.

Dr. Pfaltzgraff is also the founder and President of the Institute of Foreign Policy Analysis (IFPA), which is located in Cambridge, MA and Washington, DC. IFPA is an independent, non-partisan organization that conducts research that produces policy briefings, reports and other publications. IFPA also organizes conferences, workshops, and seminars here and abroad. Its work is made available to policymakers, military leaders, the broader public policy community, and industry. IFPA undertakes studies on a broad range of issues including proliferation, countering weapons of mass destruction, the future of alliances, security cooperation, national security strategy, military modernization and transformation, and homeland security. The geographic focus of its work includes all regions of strategic importance to the United States.

He has held a visiting appointment as the George C. Marshall Professor at the College of Europe, Bruges, Belgium and as a Professor at the National Defense College, Tokyo, Japan. In addition, he has served as an Honorary Professor of the University of St. Andrews in Scotland. His areas of academic specialization include international relations theory, crisis management, homeland security, alliance relationships, missile defense, space strategy, counterproliferation, and the long war against terrorism.

Dr. Pfaltzgraff has published extensively and lectured widely at government, academic, and industry forums in the United States and overseas, including the National Defense University, the NATO Defense College, the Army War College, the Naval War College, the Armed Forces Staff College, the Air Command Staff College, and the United States Military Academy at West Point.

Dr. Pfaltzgraff graduated from Swarthmore College with a BA with honors and from the Wharton School, University of Pennsylvania, with a MBA in International Business. He also holds an MA in International Relations and a PhD in Political Science from the University of Pennsylvania.
