In 2010, the International Atomic Energy Agency established the Peaceful Uses Initiative to raise voluntary contributions in support of activities that promote the peaceful uses of nuclear technology.
I am pleased to announce today that, under this initiative, the U.S. Department of State and U.S. Department of Energy are contributing approximately $1.9 million in funding in support of projects to address ocean and marine issues. These issues include ocean acidification, marine pollution, climate change, seafood safety, and marine and coastal environment monitoring.
This additional funding will bring our overall U.S. contributions to marine and ocean issues under the Peaceful Uses Initiative to over $3.4 million since 2010.
The United States encourages governments to explore with the International Atomic Energy Agency how they could contribute to projects that address critical ocean and marine environment issues.
