Significant Military Exercise Briefs (SMEB)
 By Presidential Directive, the Department of Defense must brief the White House when it plans to conduct a military exercise in an area designated by the Department of State as a politically sensitive. ISO is responsible for coordinating Department of State clearances on military exercises and training operations involving foreign participants that are conducted in an area designated as politically sensitive. ISO collects proposals from other Department of State offices for countries to include in the Politically Sensitive Area (PSA) list.

Significant Military Exercise Notifications (SMEN)
 When military exercises are not sensitive enough to require DOS clearance, DoD is only required to notify the White House. ISO distributes SMEN information packages through appropriate departmental channels, but does not return any input to DoD.

Theater Missile Defense
 ISO coordinates all theater-related missile defense activities for the PM Bureau and serves as its main link to DoD.

DOS Involvement in DoD Exercises
 ISO is the coordinator for Department of State participation in military exercises, seminars, war-games, and conferences. In addition to drawing from the various regional and functional specialists within the Department for these events, ISO action officers maintain a list of interagency contacts to ensure clear communication with the Department of Defense.

Developing Countries Combined Exercise Program
 ISO action officers process DOS clearance for activities funded by DoD's Developing Countries Combined Exercise Program. The program supports DoD exercises designed to strengthen ties with foreign military counterparts in developing nations.

Joint Combined Exchange Training (JCET)
JCET is a training effort with local host government forces primarily intended to give area orientation to U.S. Special Operations Forces. JCET exercises are usually composed of between 10 and 40 troops and operate under the authority of Section 2011 of Title 10, U.S. Code (1991).
