The State-Defense Integration Division (SDI) is comprised of two branches: State Defense Exchange and Strategic Engagement. As a team, SDI provides Department of State support to the Department of Defense for training, education, exercises, and wargames. SDI also facilitates engagements between senior State Department and Defense Department officials and manages the departments’ exchange of personnel. These activities serve to enhance the strategic and operational relationships between the two departments.
The State Defense Exchange Branch orchestrates personnel exchange between the Department of State and the Department of Defense in order to build and maintain shared expertise, which better informs the making of U.S. policy and enhances the effectiveness of its implementation.
The Strategic Engagement Branch promotes foreign policy dialogue between the Department of State and the Department of Defense, thereby increasing the understanding of shared equities, capability gaps, and mutually supportive strategies.
