Washington, DC
October 20, 2005

The World Association of Non-Governmental Organizations (WANGO) has selected Roots of Peace (www.rootsofpeace.org) as the 2005 recipient of the WANGO Peace & Security Award. WANGO recognizes and supports leadership and excellence in various fields of human endeavors, such as human rights, environment, peace and security, humanitarian works, and education. Roots of Peace is being recognized for its work to turn "Mines into Vines" in Afghanistan and other mine-afflicted communities around the world. The WANGO award will be presented to Roots of Peace on November 19, in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic.

WANGO is the world’s largest, general purpose, international membership association for NGOs, with members in over 140 nations. The Association’s membership encompasses the vast spectrum of the NGO world, ranging from small non-profits focused on their local communities to major, international organizations with global agendas. WANGO’S mission is to service its member organizations, strengthen and encourage the non-governmental sector as a whole, increase public understanding of the non-governmental community, and provide the mechanism and support needed for NGOs to connect, partner, and multiply their contributions to solve humanity’s basic problems. Information on WANGO can be found at www.wango.org.
