The U.S. Humanitarian Mine Action Program and NADR Funding
The U.S. Government's Humanitarian Mine Action Program seeks to relieve human suffering while promoting U.S. interests. The Program's objectives are to protect victims of conflict and create conditions for the return of refugees and displaced persons to their homes; restore access to land and infrastructure; promote conflict resolution and peace-building efforts; develop host nation capacity to effectively manage and execute mine action; demonstrate support for friends, allies, and partners; improve the global humanitarian mine action response mechanism; engage civil society and the private sector in supporting mine action; and facilitate small arms/light weapons and MANPADS destruction efforts and unexploded ordnance clean-up. Since Fiscal Year 1993, the United States has committed over $1.3 billion to mine action initiatives, including research and development. Much of the U.S. Department of State's contributions to humanitarian mine action funding is drawn from the Nonproliferation, Anti-terrorism, Demining, and Related Programs (NADR) account.
