Shaun E. Donnelly
Ambassador to Sri Lanka
On September 24, 1997, President Clinton nominated Shaun Donnelly to be the United States Ambassador to Sri Lanka and serve concurrently as U.S. Ambassador to the Republic of Maldives. Ambassador Donnelly was confirmed on November 6, 1997. He arrived in Colombo on December 6, 1997.
Shaun Donnelly served as Deputy Assistant Secretary in charge of Trade Policy and Programs in the State Department's Bureau of Economic and Business Affairs from January 1996 to July 1997. He was responsible for all international trade issues at the Department of State, and worked closely with the U.S. Trade Representative and other U.S. Government agencies to develop, negotiate, and implement trade policy.
Ambassador Donnelly has been a Foreign Service Officer with the Department of State since 1972. He has served as an Economic/Commercial Officer in the American Embassies in Senegal, Ethiopia, and Egypt, and as a Financial Economist in the Office of Development Finance in Washington.
Ambassador Donnelly was born in Culver, Indiana, which he still considers home. He graduated from Culver Military Academy in 1964. He earned a B.A. in Economics from Lawrence University in Appleton, Wisconsin in 1968, and an M.A. in Economics from Northwestern University in Evanston, Illinois in 1971.
Ambassador Donnelly is married to Susan Buesing Donnelly. They have two young sons, Alex and Eric.
