Creation of Position: The International Development Act of 1961 (Sep 4, 1961; P.L. 87-195; 75 Stat. 447) authorized the President, with the advice and consent of the Senate, to appoint an "Inspector General, Foreign Assistance" to ensure that foreign assistance programs were efficiently administered. On Jun 20, 1977, the Secretary of State directed the Inspector General of the Foreign Service to perform the functions of the Inspector General of Foreign Assistance. The International Development and Food Assistance Act of 1977 (Aug 3, 1977; P.L. 95-88; 91 Stat. 541) formally authorized the transfer of functions, which was completed by Jul 1, 1978.
