FAST-TRAINThe Foreign Affairs Spouses Teacher Training Program (FAST-TRAIN) has now become an integral part of the Graduate School of Education at George Mason University located in Fairfax, VA. Started in 1990 as a 3-year pilot project by the Office of Overseas Schools and George Mason University, the program's objective is to train Foreign Affairs agencies' spouses and any applicant wishing to teach overseas, who possess an undergraduate degree in a liberal arts discipline, to teach in overseas schools. The curriculum consists of six required education courses offered over a 1-year period. Upon successful completion of coursework and passing scores on the Praxis Exam, participants receive a provisional Virginia teaching certificate at the PK-6 (elementary) level. Once graduates have completed either 1 semester of student teaching or 1 year of teaching abroad, they receive the Collegiate Professional Certificate, the regular license for Virginia teachers. Since Virginia has a reciprocal agreement with more than 35 other states, FAST-TRAIN graduates will be qualifies to teach in a variety of settings throughout the USA and abroad. Since the inception of the program, over 170 students have received teaching certificates, and many are now teaching in overseas schools. For more information, please consult:
