2000-2001 The American International School of Abuja (AISA) is a coeducational international day school, which offers an educational program from preschool to grade 8 for English-speaking students of all nationalities. Located in Nigeria's new capital, AISA was founded in 1993, and its school year runs from September to June with 180 days of instruction. Organization: A 7-member Board of Directors governs the School. The Board consists of 4 Americans, including the U.S. Ambassador's appointed representative and 3 other members elected by the School Association. The school superintendent and assistant superintendent hold ex-officio, non-voting positions. Curriculum: AISA offers a standard U.S. curriculum for kindergarten to grade 8. Apart from French classes, all lessons are taught in English. The School offers computer programs for all students and some English-as-a-Second-Language instruction. After school activities includes sports, a newspaper club, arts and crafts. AISA is a candidate for accreditation with the Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools. Faculty: In the 2000-2001 school year, AISA has 19 faculty members on staff, including a full-time superintendent and assistant superintendent. Half of the teachers have been trained either in the United States or the United Kingdom. Enrollment: At the beginning of the 2000-2001 school year, enrollment was 110 students (PS-grade 8) from approximately 15 different countries. Class size is limited to 20 students. The families of many students are posted to Abuja with international construction companies or the growing diplomatic community. Sixty percent of the students hold foreign passports. Facilities: AISA occupies 1 site incorporating 3 buildings with 11 classrooms, a music/video room, a learning center, a computer lab with 11 computers, a library, a science lab, 3 administrative offices and a staff room. Recreation facilities include a playground, a soccer field, a volleyball court, and a basketball court. Finances: For the 2000-2001 academic year, the majority of the School's income derives from tuition fees. Annual tuition rates are as follows: PS: $2,400; PK: $3,300; Kdg.: $5,346; grades 1-5: $7,182; and grades 6-8: $7,524. A one-time capital fee of $1,500 is assessed for each student upon entry into the School. It is a one fee per family assessment. (All fees are quoted in U.S. dollars.)
