2000-2001 The International School of Aruba (ISA) is a nonprofit, coeducational English-speaking school serving students from Pre-kindergarten (Montessori-Program) to grade 12. The School year comprises 2 semesters extending from August 17 to June 7, 2001. Organization: ISA is governed by a 10-member Board. Nine of the members are selected from the community and parent group and 1 is an officio member. The School is incorporated in Aruba and is a non-profit foundation. ISA is an USA State Department assisted school (AOS). Curriculum: The curriculum is that of U.S. general academic, college preparatory public schools. The testing program includes the IOWA tests, the PSAT, SAT, and Advanced Placement exams. Most of the graduates go on to universities in the United States. The school has been accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools since 1990. ISA has a School-to-School partnership with the Arlington, Virginia Public School District. Faculty: There are 27 faculty members in the 2000-2001 school year, including 20 U.S. citizens, 4 Dutch/Arubans, and 3 third country nationals. In addition to the teaching staff, the faculty includes a librarian, learning and ESL specialists, two assistant counselor/administrators, business manager, an executive secretary, and an USA trained headmaster. Enrollment: At beginning of the 2000-2001 school year, there were 162 students. Of the total, 50 were U.S. citizens, 39 Dutch/Aruba citizens, and 73 were of other nationalities. Of the U.S. enrollment, 2 were dependents of U.S. government direct-hire or contract employees, 26 of U.S. business and foundation employees and 22 of other private U.S. citizens. Facilities: The School is housed in an air-conditioned brick 2-story building designed to serve 250 students. There is a covered Pre-K/K play area and 11 teacher houses. Additionally, the school grounds include an open soccer/softball field, a basketball court, a playground, and volleyball court. A modern library with Internet access, a computer lab, and science labs are also part of the school's facilities. The library collection is currently being computerized for electronic card catalog and check out usage. ISA is presently in the process of moving to a more central location on the island. Finances: In the 2000-2001 school year, approximately 95 percent of the School's income derived from regular tuition. Coastal Refinery of Houston, Texas, a major U.S. employer in Aruba, and the Parent Association make significant financial contributions to the School each year. Annual tuition rates range from $4,320 (PK) to $9,705 (high school). Air-conditioned bus service is included in the above fees. (All fees are quoted in U.S. dollars.)
