Mr. Scott Root, Director 2000-2001 The Ashgabat International School is a private, non-profit day school which offers an educational program from kindergarten through grade 11 for students of all nationalities. The School was founded in 1994. The School comprises 3 terms extending from early September to mid-June. The calendar includes a 2 ½ week winter break, a 1 week summer break and several long weekends. Organization: The School is governed by Quality Schools International, a private, non-profit organization that organizes and operates international schools. The School also has a local Advisory Board composed of 6 to 10 members and a Parental Involvement Committee. Curriculum: The curriculum is founded on the principles of Mastery Learning and is similar to that of U.S. general academic public schools. Instruction is in English. Russian and French are taught at various levels. Intensive English is available at all grade levels. Coursework at each age level is generally comprised of the following: reading, language arts, social studies, mathematics, science, physical education, music, art, computer, typing, and library. The School is fully accredited by both the commission on international and Trans-Regional Accreditation (CITA) and the Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools. Faculty: There are 8 full-time and 6 part-time faculty members in the 2000-2001 school year, including 6 U.S. citizens, 6 host-country nationals, and 2 South African citizens. The school also employs 4 host-country teacher assistants. All classroom teachers are certified instructors. Enrollment: Enrollment at the opening of the 2000-2001 school year was 75 (Kdg.-grade 11). Facilities: The new facility, which was completed in July 1998, is situated on 5 hectares of land behind the U.S. housing complex. Located in the foothills of the Berzengi district, the building overlooks the city and the Saparmurat Niyazov Turkmenbashi museum. The new facility includes central air conditioning and heat, a 3000-volume library, 8 classrooms, 15 computers and other resources. The fenced campus includes a regulation-sized grassed soccer field, volleyball court, and playground equipment. Most physical education classes are taught ath the BRIDAS Oil Company compound to take advantage of its swimming pool, tennis courts, all-terrain soccer field, and grassed areas. Finances: In the 2000-2001 school year, about 95 percent of the School's income derives from regular school tuition. Annual tuition rates were as follows: PS: $3,600; Kdg.: $7,500; and grades 1-11: $10,000. The School also charges an annual capital fund fee of $1,600 per student, or a capital fund deposit of $4,000, and a one-time registration fee of $100. Only non-Turkmen students in grades K-11 are charged the capital fee. Bus service is available for $65 per month. A limited number of scholarships are available for Turkmen students only. A $500 discount is given for full-year early payment, and $100 for early payments per term. These fees are payable in U.S. dollars.
