2000-2001

The International School Bangkok (ISB), founded in 1951, is a private, coeducational and nonprofit school which offers an educational program from kindergarten through grade 12. The school year comprises 2 semesters extending approximately from August 16 to December 17 and from January 10 to June 9.

Organization: ISB is governed by a 12-member Board of Directors elected for 2-year terms by the International School Association of Bangkok, the sponsor of the School. Membership in the Association is automatically conferred on the parents or guardians of children enrolled in the School. The School is incorporated and has tax-exempt status under Thai law, except for employees who pay Thai income tax.

Curriculum: The curriculum is that of U.S. general academic college-preparatory public schools and instruction is in English. Every effort is made to accommodate students who are not college-bound. The School offers SAT, PSAT and other tests., French, Spanish, Japanese, Chinese and Thai are taught as modern languages. There is no religious instruction. Most of the U.S. graduates go on to colleges and universities in the United States. ISB offers special educational services for mild learning disabilities, such as remedial math and reading, and speech pathology. The International Baccalaureate diploma and some Advanced Placement courses are offered. The School is accredited by the Western Association of Schools and Colleges and chartered by the Thailand Ministry of Education.

Faculty: At the beginning of the 2000-2001 school year, there were 182 full-time and 9 part-time faculty members, including 119 U.S. citizens, 13 host-country nationals, and 59 third-country nationals.

Enrollment: Enrollment at the beginning of the 2000-2001 school year was 1,750. Of the total, 560 were U.S. citizens, 368 were host-country nationals, and 822 were children from 46 third-country nationals. Of the U.S. enrollment, 180 were dependents of U.S. government direct-hire or contract employees.

Facilities: The School is located 25 km. from the center of Bangkok on a 35-acre plot of land. Facilities, opened in January 1992, include 3 separate groups of buildings (Kdg.-grade 5, grades 6-8, and grades 9-12), 2 gymnasiums, 7 tennis courts, sports and track fields, and a swimming pool. The School has 8 computer laboratories (K-12), modern science facilities, a video command system in every room, and a theater which seats 700.

Finances: In the 2000-2001 school year, about 95 percent of the School's income derives from regular day school tuition. As of September 2000, annual tuition rates were as follow: Kdg-grade 5: $8,820; grades 6-8: $9,600; and grades 9-12: $9,803. There is a registration fee of $5,000 and a refundable capital fee of $12,850 in lieu of an annual fee of $1,750. (All fees are quoted in U.S. dollars.)
