The Benjamin Franklin International School is an independent, coeducational day school, which offers an educational program from nursery through grade 12 for students of all nationalities. The School was founded in 1986. The school year comprises 3 terms extending from September 4 to November 24, from November 25 to March 16, and from March 17 to June 22.

Organization: The School is governed by a 9-member Board of Governors. Board membership is self-perpetuating. The School is legally recognized as a Spanish Association and is owned by the Benjamin Franklin Foundation.

Curriculum: The curriculum is that of U.S. general academic, college-preparatory schools. The School's testing program includes the Iowa Test of Basic Skills, the Test of Academic Proficiency, and the ERB Writing Assessment. The PSAT, SAT, TOEFL and College Board Achievement Tests are available. Instruction is in English. Spanish, Catalan, and French are taught as foreign languages, and classes are given in Spanish literature and history for grades 6-12 in the Spanish language. Advanced Placement courses are offered in English, Spanish, biology, chemistry, physics, and mathematics. Psychological testing and private tutorial assistance are available in the School and/or community. College counseling services and an Optimal Match Program are available for all students. ESL classes are available for grades 1-10 and SFL in grades 1-12. The School is fully accredited by the Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools.

Faculty: There are 32 full-time and 7 part-time faculty members in the 2000-2001 school year, including 23 U.S. citizens, 12 host-country nationals, and 4 third-country nationals.

Enrollment: Enrollment at the opening of the 2000-2001 school year was 297 (N-grade 5: 140; grades 6-8: 64; and grades 9-12: 93). Of the total, 77 were U.S. citizens, 114 were host-country nationals, and 106 were third-country nationals. Of the U.S. enrollment, 4 were dependents of U.S. government direct-hire or contract employees; 48 were dependents of U.S. business and foundation employees; and 25 were dependents of other private U.S. citizens.

Facilities: In 1991, the School moved to new facilities located in a residential area of Barcelona. The facilities consist of 2 renovated villas and 2 classroom annexes. The main villa houses elementary grades 1, 2, and 5; the middle school (grades 6-8); library, computer laboratory, cafeteria, kitchen and main offices. Grades 3-4 are located in a villa in a separate annex with 2 playgrounds and the art and music rooms for all grades. Grades 9-12 are located in a separate building. Nursery, prekindergarten and kindergarten have individual classrooms and a separate playground. There are 2 fully equipped laboratories for chemistry, physics and biology.

Finances: In the 2000-2001 school year, about 99 percent of the School's income derives from regular day school tuition and fees. Annual tuition rates are as follows: N-Kdg.: $3,162; grades 1-5: $4,422; grades 6-8: $4,892; and grades 9-12: $6,135. The School also charges a matriculation fee of $443-$486 and a one-time capital fund fee of $1,216. Optional fees include a lunch fee of $795 and a bus fee of $913-$1,069. These fees are payable in Spanish pesetas or U.S. dollars. (All fees are quoted in U.S. dollars.)
