Mr. Phil Sylla, Director 2000-2001 The QSI International School of Bratislava is an independent, coeducational day school, which offers an educational program from prekindergarten through grade 12 for students of all nationalities. The School was founded in 1994. The school year comprises 3 terms extending from early September to mid-December, from early January to late March, and from early April to mid-June. Organization: The School is governed by the Board of Directors and Bylaws of Quality Schools International, a consortium of 19 schools in Europe, Asia, and the Middle East. An Advisory Board, composed of 6 to 10 members who reside in Bratislava, assists the School in its operation. The School operates with the approval of the Slovakian government. Curriculum: The School offers an outcomes-based educational program with a curriculum similar to that of U.S. public and private schools. Instruction is in English. In addition to a rigorous academic program, the curriculum includes physical education, art, music, computer and drama. German, Slovak, and French are taught as foreign languages. Advanced Placement courses are offered for secondary school students. Extra curricular activities are offered for students of all ages. The School participates in the cultural, sports, and professional development activities of CEESA, The Central and Eastern European Schools Association. The School is accredited by the Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools, recognized by the Slovakian Ministry of Education, and a member of the European Council of International Schools. Faculty: There are 19 full-time and 7 part-time faculty members in the 2000-2001 school year, including 13 U.S. citizens, 5 host-country nationals, and 8 third-country nationals. Enrollment: Enrollment at the opening of the 2000-2001 school year was 140 (PK-grade 12). Of the total, 19 were U.S. citizens, 18 were host-country nationals, and 103 were third-country nationals. Of the U.S. enrollment, 7 were dependents of U.S. government direct-hire or contract employees, 6 of U.S. business and foundation employees, and 6 of private U.S. citizens. Facilities: Located in an athletic and cultural complex owned by the Slovakian government, the School has 25 classrooms, a library, a computer laboratory, a science laboratory, playgrounds, an office, and storage space. Other facilities include an indoor swimming pool, a fitness facility, dance and exercise rooms, a gymnasium, a theater, a snack bar, and a cafeteria. School busing and excellent local transportation facilities are available. Finances: In the 2000-2001 school year, 98 percent of the School's income derives from regular day school tuition. Annual tuition rates are as follows: PK: $5,700; Kdg.: $9,200; and grades 1-12: $11,700. The School also charges a non-refundable annual capital fund fee of $1,600 per student or a refundable capital fund deposit of $4,000 and a registration fee of $100. Bus fees are $900 per year. These fees are payable in U.S. dollars. (All fees are quoted in U.S. dollars.) This Fact Sheet is intended to provide general information.
