The Cairo American College is an independent, coeducational day school, which offers an educational program from kindergarten through grade 12 for students of all nationalities. The School was founded in 1945. The school year comprises 2 semesters extending from August 21 to December 20 and from January 14 to June 6.
Organization: The School is governed by a 12-member self-perpetuating Board of Directors, elected for indefinite terms.
Curriculum: The Cairo American Collge offers a rigorous education program which follows a general U.S. standards-based curriculum model. International Baccalaureate and Advanced Placement courses are offered in the high school, and starting in grade 11, students may elect to pursue an International Baccalaureate Diploma. Instruction is in English. Foreign languages include Arabic, French and Spanish in grades 3-12. English-as-a-Second-Language is offered in grades 1-10. Studies also include the history and culture of Egypt. There is no religious instruction. Ninety to 95 percent of the school's graduates go on to colleges and universities in the United States or other countries. Cairo American College is accredited by the Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools.
Faculty: There are 140 full-time and 11 part-time faculty members in the 2000-2001 school year, including 109 U.S. citizens, 15 host-country nationals, and 27 third-country nationals.
Enrollment: Enrollment at the beginning of the 2000-2001 school year was 1,370 (Kdg.-grade 5: 495; grades 6-8: 368; and grades 9-12: 507). Of the total, 725 were U.S. citizens, 184 were host-country nationals, and 461 third-country nationals. Of the U.S. enrollment, 266 were dependents of U.S. government direct-hire or contract employees, and 459 were dependents of U.S. business and foundation employees and other private U.S. citizens.
Facilities: The elementary school is housed in single-story "pods" and 2 multi-story buildings, the most recent completed in 1994. Additional elementary classrooms include art, music, and specialist areas; a cafeteria; a health office; and a multipurpose room. The middle school is located in a multi-level building, containing classrooms, laboratories, the school store, and the general services offices. The high school building contains classrooms, laboratories, a media center, a technology center, and a student center. Facilities also include a 600-seat theater, an industrial arts building, and a fine arts building. In 1989, an all-weather rubber track, tennis courts, and a multi-purpose basketball/volleyball facility were constructed. Other athletic facilities include a physical education building, a gymnasium, locker rooms, 2 natural grass soccer fields, and a heated pool. A music building was completed in 1997.
Finances: In the 2000-2001 school year, about 96 percent of the School's income derives from regular day school tuition and registration fees. Annual tuition rates are as follows: Kdg.-grade 5: $5,075 per semester; grades 6-8: $5,215 per semester; and grades 9-12: $5,075 per semester. A $75 fee is charged at the time of application for admission or readmission. A one-time registration fee of $2,710, a capital equipment fee of $1,015, and an annual capital building fee of $230 are also charged for all students. Other expenses (per semester) include school bus service $375 inside the Maadi area and English as a second language $1,500. (All fees are quoted in U.S. dollars.)
