2000-2001 The International School of Caracas (Colegio Internacional de Caracas) is a private, coeducational day school which offers a program from pre-kindergarten through grade 12 for students of all nationalities. It is operated by the Association Civil Academia La Castellana. The school year is comprises of 2 semesters, extending approximately from late August to late December and from late January to mid-June. Organization: The School, a nonprofit institution, is parent-owned. Each parent purchases a share (refundable) in the School when a student is registered. It is administered by a Board of Directors elected each year by the parents at the General Assembly. It is recognized by both the Venezuelan and the U.S. government as a tax-exempt organization. The School is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools. Curriculum: The curriculum is similar to that of a U.S. college-preparatory school, with additional emphasis placed on Spanish and the history and culture of Latin America. Basic instruction is given in English, but all students are required to study Spanish, or take a course taught in Spanish, each year. Most of the graduates go on to colleges or universities in the United States or Europe. The curriculum also includes the International Baccalaureate and Advanced Placement programs in grades 11 and 12. There are extensive programs in technology, fine arts, and athletics. The core curriculum for grades 6-10 incorporates the International Baccalaureate Middle Years curriculum. Faculty: There are 65 full-time and 4 part-time faculty members in the 2000-2001 school year, including 33 U.S. citizens, 26 host-country nationals, and 10 persons of other nationalities. Enrollment: Enrollment at the beginning of the 2000-2001 school year was 450 (PK-grade 5: 220; grades 6-8: 125; and grades 9-12: 105). Of the total, 140 were U.S. citizens, 110 were host-country nationals, and 200 were of other nationalities. Of the U.S. enrollment, 15 were dependents of U.S. government direct-hire employees, 48 of U.S. business and foundation employees, 2 of religious organization employees, and 75 of other private U.S. citizens. Facilities: The facilities consist of 37 classrooms; 6 laboratories; a library with over 30,000 volumes, 70 magazines and numerous audio-visual materials; 4 computer rooms; a new elementary wing; 9 offices; 2 book rooms; 2 art rooms; and 2 music rooms. The 3 secondary science laboratories have been newly refurbished and are designed to be used by both secondary and elementary students. All classrooms and the media center have access to the Internet. There is abundant space for outdoor sports and recreation as the school has a full-size soccer field, covered basketball courts, and a street hockey area. There is a modern canteen and eating area. In the June of 2000 the School will begin an extensive facilities improvement project. The first sage of this project, PE offices and locker rooms plus four classrooms, will be finished by December 2000. Finances: The school's income is derived from tuition. Annual tuition rates are as follows: N-PK; $5,988; Kdg. - grade 6: $8,240; grades 7-10: $10,995; and grades 11-12: $11,600. (All fees are quoted in U.S. dollars.)
