Mr. Steve Plisinski, Director 2000-2001 The American International School - Chennai (formerly the American International School - Madras) is a nonprofit, independent, coeducational day school. It was founded in August 1995 and offers a U.S. style educational program from preschool (3+ years) through grade 12 for American and international students and Indian nationals who obtain a "No Objection Certificate" from the Central Government's Ministry of External Affairs before admission. The school year extends from August to June. Organization: The School is governed by a 5-member Board of Directors. The U.S. Ambassador or designee serves on the Board. Two members are appointed by the U.S. Ambassador, and two are elected from the parent body. Curriculum: The School offers an U.S.-style curriculum, similar to that of a U.S. public school and uses U.S. textbooks and instructional materials. Instruction is in English. Intensive English language programs are provided for non-native-English-speaking students. French is taught as a foreign language, and specialist teachers are available for art, music and physical education classes. The School is a member of the Near East South Asia Council of Overseas Schools and the Association for the Advancement of International Education and is pursuing full accreditation through the Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools. The high school program is currently accredited through the University of Nebraska. The Russian Cultural Center houses PS-grade 3, and the remaining grades occupy two former office buildings a few blocks away. Planning is underway for the construction of a purpose-built facility within the next few years. Finances: In the 2000-2001 school year, 99 percent of the School's income derives from tuition and fees. The annual tuition rates are as follows: PS: $2,750; Kdg.-grade 8: $9,500; and grades 9-12: $11,500. There is a one-time registration fee of $3,000 and a one-time application fee of $110.
