2000-2001 The International School of Conakry (ICS) is a small independent day school, which offers a strong academic U.S. curriculum from nursery through grade 8. The School also offers correspondence studies for grades 9-12. The School runs from early September until early June. There is a 2-week break at Christmas and a one-week break in February and a one-week break in April. Organization: ISC is governed by 7-member Board of Directors elected at large from members of the Parents' Association. The Association is made up of parents of the enrolled children and teachers at the ISC. There are 2 general meetings of the Association and elections are held at the meeting in October. Curriculum: Instruction is in English. Classes are very small and, as a result, students receive individualized attention. The School accepts students between the ages of 2 and 19 based upon the result of a personal interview, previous school records, and recommendations. The school day begins at 8:00 a.m. and ends 2:30 p.m. with a 35-minute on-site lunch break. English as a Second Language is provided to those students who have not had experience in an English-language school setting. French is taught to all nurseries through grade 8. The School emphasizes the core subjects of English, Math, Science, and the core related subjects of computer, library, art, music, and physical education. The Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools accredits ISC. Faculty: In the 2000-2001 school year, there are 7 full-time core teachers, 2 part-time core teachers, 1 librarian and 1 counselor. The teaching staff includes 6 U.S. citizens, 1 host-country national, and 2 third-country nationals. Enrollment: At the beginning of the 2000-2001 school year, enrollment was 60 students. Of the total, 14 were U.S. citizens, 3 were host-country nationals, and 43 third-country nationals. Facilities: ICS is located in Matam Lido, Corniche Sud Conakry 111. The School is housed in a 7-classroom building, which includes a library, a computer lab, and a science/art/music room. The School is fully air-conditioned and has its own generator. ISC's usable space (classrooms, playground) will expand with the lease of a next-door building. Renovation on the property should be completed in November. Finances: For the 2000-2001 school year, about 97 percent of the School's budget derive from tuition income. The annual tuition rates are as follows: N: $2,000; PK: $3,000; Kdg.: $8,600; and grades 1-8: $11,000. Correspondence courses for grades 9-12 are $11,000. There is a one-time only building fee of $1,500 for each new student and a annual registration fee of $500. (All fees are quoted in U.S. dollars.)
