Mr. Ron Halsey, Director 2000-2001 The International School of Dakar (ISD), which opened in 1983, is the only non-sectarian English language school in Dakar. ISD is an independent, coeducational day school offering an enriched U.S. educational program to reflect the diverse international background of the student body and the faculty. Classes for the school year 2000-2001 are offered in preschool through grade 9. The School offers a correspondence study program for grades 10-12. The school year extends from late August to mid-June. Organization: A 7-member Board of Directors elected governs the school by the International School Association of Dakar, the sponsoring body of the School. Membership in the Association is automatically conferred on the parents or guardians of children enrolled in the School and to the teaching faculty. A representative of the U.S. Ambassador is an ex-officio member of the Board. Curriculum and Structure: ISD follows a curriculum found in most U.S. public schools. Instruction is in English. French is offered every day at 3 levels to students from Kdg.-9. Every student also has classes in art, music, computers, physical education, and science. The School, committed to quality education in an international environment, provides specialized training in English-as-a-Second-Language. It has a resource program for students with different learning needs. The Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools accredits ISD. The preschool class is for 3 and 4-year-old children and is a half-day program in a self-contained classroom for core subjects. grades 6-9 have specialist teachers. The School offers a correspondence study program for grade 10. Faculty: In the 2000-2001 school year, there are 17 full-time and 7 part-time faculty members, including 10 who are U.S. citizens. All full-time teachers are certified in their country of origin, and several hold Master's degrees (or equivalent). There are also 3 teacher's aides. Enrollment: At the beginning of the 2000-2001 school year, enrollment was 178. Of the total, 53 were U.S. citizens and 27 were third-country nationals. Of the U.S. enrollment, 37 were dependents of U.S. government direct-hire or contract employees. Facilities: The new School, built in 1988, sits on 4 acres overlooking the Atlantic, on the outskirts of Dakar. It includes a library; a science lab, computer, art and music rooms, a soccer field and playground, and a multi-purpose gymnasium/auditorium. The American Club, adjoining the School, offers students access to tennis, swimming, basketball, and other sports. Finances: For the 2000-2001 school year, approximately 93 percent of the School's income derive from tuition fees. Tuition rates are as follows: Preschool: $2,500, Kdg.-9: $8,875, grade 10: $10,000. For new students, there is a $60 registration fee and a one-time only capital building fund fee of $2,500 for those in grades Kdg.-l0. A $30 fee is charged to all students re-registering.
