The American International School/Dhaka (AIS/D) is an independent, coeducational day school which offers an educational program from preschool through grade 12 for students of all nationalities. The School was founded in 1972. The school year comprises 2 semesters extending from August 20 to December 20 and from January 7 to June 7.

Organization: The School is governed by a 9-member School Board elected for 2-year terms. The Board is comprised of parents or legal guardians of students enrolled in the School. The U.S. Ambassador appoints a non-voting representative to the Board. The School is not incorporated in the United States.

Curriculum: The curriculum is that of U.S. general academic public schools. Classes are self-contained through grade 5. Instruction is in English. French and Spanish are taught as foreign languages. Courses include English-as-a-Second-Language, physical education, computer, art, music, and South Asian studies. A strong extracurricular program is maintained. The School is accredited by the Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools and the European Council of International Schools.

Faculty: There are 63 full-time and 11 part-time faculty members in the 2000-2001 school year, including 64 U.S. citizens, 2 host-country nationals, and. 8 third-country nationals.

Enrollment: Enrollment at the beginning of the 2000-2001 school year was 558 (PS-grade 5: 274; grades 6-8: 131; and grades 9-12: 153). Of the total, 104 were U.S. citizens, 91 were host-country nationals, and 363 were of other nationalities. Of the U.S. enrollment, 42 were dependents of U.S. government direct-hire or contract employees, 33 of U.S. business and foundation employees, 9 of AIS/D teachers, and 20 of other private U.S. citizens.

Facilities: The School occupies a 4 1/2-acre campus in a residential suburb of Dhaka. Completed in April 1981 and added to in 1991 and 1999, the campus consists of four adjoining buildings which house 46 general classrooms, 6 science laboratories, 3 art studios, 2 music rooms, 2 drama rooms, 5 computer laboratories, 2 libraries, 4 gymnasiums, weight room, pool, 250-seat auditorium, cafeteria, and office suites. Sports facilities include two playgrounds and two athletic fields (one off-campus). Finances: For the 2000-2001 school year, 98 percent of the School's income derives from regular day school tuition. Annual tuition rates are as follows: PS: $3,610; Kdg.-grade 5: $7,910; grade 6: $9,580; grade 7: $9,330; grade 8: $9,740; grade 9: $9,930; grade 10: $10,365; grade 11: $9,930; and grade 12: $10,590. The School also charges a $2,250 application fee for kindergarten through grade 12 and $50 for preschool. The yearly capital fees for this year are PK: $500, Kdg.-grade 3: $1,200; and grades 4-12: $1,500. Additionally, an interest-bearing, fully refundable Building Bond of $3,000 must be purchased for each student. These fees are payable in U.S. dollars.
