The Frankfurt International School (FIS) is an independent, coeducational day school, which offers an educational program from pre-primary through grade 12 for students of all nationalities. The School was founded in l961. The school year runs from August 16 through June 19.

Organization: The School is governed by a 12-member Board of Trustees, all with voting rights. Eight members are elected by the parents of children enrolled in the school, and 3 are appointed by the Board from the wider community. A faculty/staff member is elected by the faculty and staff of FIS. Honorary Board members may also be appointed.

Curriculum: The curriculum is international, centered around the programs of the International Baccalaureate with strong emphasis on academic rigor and preparation for university studies. Instruction is in English and German. French and Spanish are offered as foreign languages including an immersion program in German at certain grade levels. A first-language (mother tongue) program is also offered in several languages. English-as-a-Second-Language is offered in all grades with basic proficiency levels expected in the upper grades. Numerous cocurricular activities are offered in drama, music, arts, literary activities and sports. The School is accredited by the Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools and the European Council of International Schools.

Faculty: There are 157 full-time faculty members in the 2000-2001 school year, including 50 U.S. citizens, 22 host-country nationals, and 85 third-country nationals.

Enrollment: Enrollment at the opening of the 2000-2001 school year was 1,350 (PP-grade 5: 570; grades 6-8: 337; and grades 9-12: 443). Of the total, 409 were U.S. citizens, 232 were host-country nationals, and 709 were third-country nationals.

Facilities: The School occupies a modern, purpose-built campus with excellent arts and sports facilities. There is a theater/auditorium with seating for 400, 2 extensive libraries, 4 computer laboratories, and over 400 computers. A cafeteria serves hot meals and snacks, and an extensive bus service is available.

Finances: In the 2000-2001 school year, the School's income derives from regular day school tuition and fees. Annual tuition rates are as follows: PP-grades 4: $9,645; grade 5: $9,782; grades 6-8: $10,818; grades 9-10: $11,168; grade 11: $11,391; and grade 12: $11,627. The registration fee is $455. The School also charges a building fee of $4,545 for students on first enrollment to be paid in the first year at $1,818 and the second to fifth years at $682. The reenrollment fee is $114, and transportation costs are $868-$1,286. These fees are payable in German marks or Euros. (All fees are quoted in U.S. dollars.)
