| 2000-2001 The Fukuoka International School (FIS) is a private, coeducational day and boarding school which offers an educational program from pre-kindergarten through Grade 12 for English-speaking students of all nationalities. There are English-as-a-Second-Language classes available throughout the grades. The School was founded in 1972. The school year comprises 2 semesters extending approximately from September 1 to June 15. Organization: The School is governed by a Board of Directors and Board of Trustees composed of the educational community, business leaders, and parents of the students. The School is a member of the Japan Council of Overseas Schools and the East Asia Regional Council of Overseas Schools. Curriculum: A basic college-preparatory U.S. curriculum with the offering of the Advanced Placement Program is updated regularly to keep it current with trends in the United States as well as in other international schools around the world. English-as-a-Second-Language, multi-cultural aspects, Japanese, and information technology are used extensively. The Western Association of Schools and Colleges accredits FIS. Courses are at the college preparatory level. Students complete a minimum of 24 credits (26 college-bound) for graduation. The following are compulsory requirements: 4 credits of English, 2 credits each of math and science, (3 credits each for college bound students), 3 credits of social studies, 2 credits of PE (1/2 of which must be health), 1 credit of fine or performing arts, 1 credit in computers, and 1 credit in community service. In the 1999-2000 school year, 100 percent of the graduation class was accepted by four year colleges and universities. Recent graduates have attended Dartmouth College, University of Virginia, Brigham Young University, Savannah College of Art and Design, Tennessee State University, University of Illinois, University of Massachusetts, University of Bridgeport, Snow College, Hawaii Pacific University, Ohio State University and Santa Monica College. In addition, FIS graduates are also attending universities in Canada, Malaysia, Korea, Australia and Taiwan. Faculty: In the beginning of the 2000-2001 school year, there were 18 full-time and 6 part-time teachers, including 11 U.S. citizens. Enrollment: At the beginning of the 2000-2001 school year, enrollment was 166 (PK-Grade 6: 102; Grades 7-9: 36; and Grades 10-12: 28). Of the total, 44 were U.S. citizens, 42 were host-country nationals, and 80 were third-country nationals. Of the U.S. enrollment, 3 were dependents of U.S. government direct-hire employees, and 41 were dependents of private U.S. citizens. Facilities: In the 1990-1991 school year, a two-story physical plant with a gymnasium was constructed. In the 1994-1995 school year, a dormitory was built designed to accommodate 24 residential students. The current facilities include 11 classrooms, , a dispensary, a student lounge, a community room, and a 5,000 volume library. Finances: For the 2000-2001 school year, about 68 percent of the School's income derives from regular day school tuition and registration fees. Annual tuition rates are as follows: PK: $7,895; Kdg.-Grades 6: $8,596; Grades 7-8: $9386; and Grades 9-12: $10,088. Unless special arrangements are made with the school's treasurer, tuition is payable by the beginning of school year. There is a tuition waiver system that is based on a family's level of income as measured against the number of members in the family.
